All information on next great MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online
Article written by Zeeshan | Posted on: April 28, 2013
Everything you need to know about is in the name ‘The Elder Scrolls Online’, “It’s an Elder Scroll but it’s online”. But the changes that are being made to this game are what actually define it. We are sure that this next MMORPG is going to amazing (or at-least we hope so). The Elder Scrolls Online will be initially released as Monthly-paid subscription model but after some time it will transition towards Free-to-Play, according to Nicholas Lovell, founder of game consultancy firm Gamesbrief.
“I still believe that subscription games are on the way out,” Lovel. ”It is conceivable that Bethesda Studios will launch with a subscription service to attract the early adopters, because that is the model they understand.”
To which he added, “They will switch to free-to-play later, in the same way that many iOS games go from paid to freemium over their lifetime. EA is struggling with The Old Republic, [but] almost everyone else is transitioning to free-to-play.”
According to Elder Scroll Online.
Almost all of the known changes made to this game are covered in this article.
The Elder Scrolls Online will bring in two different groups of players together
- Elder Scrolls crowd (The ones usually known as PvE (Player VS Environment) crowd. Who usually like the Stand Alone type gameplay like the one we have previously seen in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. )
- MMORPG crowd (The ones who actively participate as PvE (Player VS Environment) as well as PvP (Player VS Player). I.E. Teaming with other players to do quests, dungeons, battles, exploration, etc.)
Bringing them all together in one great game will make it even more fun.
The game-play of this MMORPG is basically the extension of what we have previously seen in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with added features to incorporate the core requirements of MMO.
(i) Strategic Realtime Combat
This is purely the MMORPG factor which ensures that when the team sets out, they will have to make strategic decisions in realtime environment to be able to deal with different situations in the game. Rest of this section will be explained later in the article in ‘How Game Works’ section.
(ii) Questing & Exploring
The Developers really wanted the landscapes of this game as rewarding as possible by making them highly explorable, just like we have previously seen in The Elder Scrolls games.
This game will allow you to:
- Return to places you have already Explored (most probably for farming or gaining experience points, etc.)
- Exploring new places that you have never been.
Elder Scrolls Online won’t require much effort from its players when it comes to Exploring. Players will be able to find new quests or places while doing other quests. In Elder Scrolls Online, “it’s not like ‘what do i do next, it’s like which one should i do next”.
(iii) Combat System and Controls
The controls for combat system of this game will be just like the one we have seen in Skyrim. i.e.:
Skill binding on mouse buttons, left mouse button to use one handed weapons as well as two handed weapons, right click button to block (with shield or 2 handed weapons)
Other controls include:
Sneaking, Crouching, sprinting, jump, etc.
Key bindings will be same as Skyrim or Oblivion.
3. Races in Elder Scrolls Online
There will be 9 races in ESO. So players can pick 1 from these 9 races to be able to pick a Class as their characters in ESO. It is expected that these races will be the ones from Skyrim. Therefore, they will be:
- Snow Elf
Although, we can’t be 100% sure but Bethesda Studios didn’t mention that they will be releasing 4-5 races at start and remaining races with time just like other MMORPGs do.
4. Customization Options
Lots of customization options will be provided to players, to be able to make their characters look unique.
(i) Character Design:
Players will be provided with options to control the body and facial outlook of their characters. So you will to modify the looks of your character by changing parameters like chin size, jaw size & shape, hair type, colors, body structure, etc. I believe that more customization options will be provided to players of Elder Scrolls Online than the options provided to players of Skyrim, etc. so that player controlled characters will look different from NPCs (Non Player Characters) as well as from the other player controlled characters .
This is also one of the most popular features of MMORPGs and allows players to get recognized or maybe even add your customized character to your forum signature like most people usually do.
(ii) Armors and Weapons:
The game will include armors and weapons of types:
This means that all major armor styles that we have previously seen in Skyrim and Oblivion. But we are not sure about the other types of armors & weapons that we have seen in Skyrim, e.g. glass, falmer etc. Developers didn’t even mention the Ebony armors.
(iii) Fashion or Constumes/Outfits:
In previous Elder Scrolls games, we have seen clothes/outfits that you can wear by replacing the armor pieces and robes. But we all are aware of the concept of Fashion and Costumes in MMORPGs that give stylish looks to characters without replacing armor or robes. Which means that you can even do combat in those clothes without losing your armor attributes.
As far as unique Fashions or Costumes are concerned, we are still not sure if this will be supported in The Elder Scrolls Online or not but we may see them as micro-transactions in game.
(iv) Character Attributes and Perks:
This will be another additional feature which will help in making your character distinct and more effective in PvE and PvP combats.
The decisions about how you increase your attributes (Stamina, Magicka and Health) are the ones that will let you stand out and perform better in the battlefield.
Moreover, you will be able to pick between perks:
- Special pets
5. Character Building
When you will be building a character in Elder Scrolls Online, your decisions at the start of the game and throughout the game will actually decide what exactly you are going to end up as.
First major decision is of Race and Class. Choose the one that suits your taste as there are plenty of them to select from.
Second would be continuous throughout the lifetime of your game and that is what attributes are you going to increase. And what would be your strategy because this will decide how better you will be able to do in the battlefield.
Third major decision would be, what weapons are you going to use? What abilities you are going to choose? And what armor you are going to use? These decisions are important because you can use anything on any class. Therefore, you have to decide which one will be the best selection for the role you have selected for yourself. (Just like Skyrim you can be anything by trying multiple permutations of armors and weapons and selecting the one that suits you best. E.g. you can be heavy armor mage or a sneaky healer).
Fourth and last one will be of-course the decision of perk selection. You will have to choose between three of the above mentioned perks depending on the situation.
But keep in mind, making the best selections in the above 4 character building areas will actually make you stand out and definitely perform well in PvE and PvP.
6. Story Origins
The Story origins of The Elder Scrolls Online are 1000 years before Skyrim. This game will be a composite of the previous Elder Scrolls games and will include all the legends that we have read/heard about in previous Elder Scrolls games or books.
7. Social Systems and Servers
Some new Social Systems will be introduced in The Elder Scrolls Online. Purpose of those Social Systems is to solve these questions in-game:
- How players will group up together to fight for a common cause?
- How players will be rewarded after questing with fellow players?
- In what ways players will be allowed to communicate?
And there are many other examples. One of the most important (about which we do not have any information yet) is Auction House/Market-Place where players will be able to put items for sale. Or maybe even any such feature will be provided in game or not? Will NPCs be only mode to actually sell the items you farmed? Or will there be any unique and valuable items that players will be able to sell to others to earn gold, etc. Well, this will open up an entirely new topic that I may discuss in another article.
(i) Mega Server:
But there is this one feature that Bethesda Studios is going to give to the players of The Elder Scrolls Online and it will entirely change the way MMORPGs currently look. According to the developers, there will be no Shard (smaller sub-servers to manage the game traffic and to manage the load on server. Once you select a shard, you stay there unless you change it on reboot.) System which means that there is only one server. They call it ‘Mega Server’, so all players will be on the same server. And you will not have to change shards to meet or play with your friends or guild mates.
But that’s not it. Developers also say that the game will be smart enough to put you with your friends and guild mates in game space. It will be a smart way to stay connected with everyone and game algorithms will figure out how to do so.
7. How Game Works
There are certain mechanics on which this MMORPG works. These are the core features which will help Elder Scrolls Online stand out and be the next greatest mmorpg.
(i) Dungeons & Neutral monsters:
Elder Scrolls Online will have many dungeons where you can team up with your friends, strangers or guild mates to clear them up. ESO will be having
- Public Dungeons
- Heroic Dungeons
Another fun feature that will make ESO experience worth trying is that there will be Neutral Things like monsters, etc that you can come across while exploring, interesting thing is that you can overcome such obstacles without even worrying about asking friends to help. You will be automatically teamed up with strangers where you will be rewarded equally for helping each other.
(ii) Points of Interest (POI):
There will be many POIs in the Elder Scrolls Online world, some will be unlocked as player progresses through levels. An on-screen compass will direct the player to nearby Opportunities/POIs that player can get into. And when the player finds a POI in the world, this is where Story opens up.
(iii) Dynamic ESO World:
Elder Scrolls Online will have a dynamic world which means that as you progress through story, your decisions will leave a permanent impact on the ESO world.
For Example, You get to find a POI where there is a werewolf invasion on a town. If you save the town, it will be permanent and the people of that town will remember you and thank you whenever you will return to that town.
To add value to this feature of ESO, many visuals and cinematics will be added.
(iv) Post level-50 Game:
“Once you hit level 50, this is where the game opens up”. That’s what developers say. This is where you will decide whether you want to go for PvP, some Heroic Raid with you guild mates/friends or some adventure. You will be able to go solo or with team mates (normal to large teams depending on the difficulty level of dungeons or bosses).
According to the current information on Elder Scrolls Online, PvP battles will take place in CYRODIIL (the place on map of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion). This is a really big place and is perfect for large scale PvP battles; moreover it is in the middle of Three-Alliances, letting them fight each other with all kind of weaponry, catapults, etc in-order to hold keeps, various structures, resources, etc.
- Daggerfall Covenant
- Ebonheart Pact
- Aldmeri Dominion
And because there is no emperor in Cyrodiil, so it opens up the opportunity for these three alliances to be able to win and crown one of themselves as emperor.
And because PvP is not just something you could do after earning the game so in Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda Studios is trying to put everyone on equal footing. So even at level 10 you can go in PVP area and still have great experience and a good time.
Our favorite question about ESO right now is that ‘Will ESO be able to become the next great MMORPG?’ because when this game will be released, there will be many other mmorpgs in competition. So how will ESO be able to face the challenges? Keeping the dedication, investment, efforts and plans of Bethesda for making ESO makes me believe that they will be able to make it next great MMORPG. There is still a lot more to be known about ESO, so we can keep our hopes high.
I hope you liked this article and are as excited as we are to get our hands on this great MMORPG, Elder Scrolls Online. Have any ideas or suggestions? Share with us in the comments section below.
