Which league of legends champion should I choose?
Article written by Zeeshan | Posted on: May 5, 2013
League of legends has over 100 champions from which you can select. No champion is better than any other because League of Legends is all about team compositions and teamwork. If you are better than your opponents in both team composition and teamwork, you are probably going to have a better late game no matter what. And of-course we also don’t want to lose the lane to your opponents while trying to achieve a theoretically good team composition. This is exactly what we have previously discussed in ‘Most effective League of Legends team compositions’ and ‘How to counter effective League of Legends team compositions’. Therefore, if you could manage to keep a balance between individual champion pick and a team-champion then that will be great.
As you might have heard this quote, “It’s not the gun, but the man behind it”. And it is true for you, your enemies and everyone. This means that if you do a counter pick or get countered by enemy pick, this is not the end of the world. League of Legends gives you the opportunity where you can always come up with a good strategy on both individual level as well as on team level in-order to emerge victorious.
To get the answer of your question ‘which league of legends champion should I choose?’ you will first have to figure out the answer of this question (“Which Role am I going to fulfill on the battlefield”) because the actual answer lies in it. There are 5 major Role-Classification in League of Legends for its champions (please, note that this is generic classification. JUNGLERS will be explained separately):
- Ranged Magic damage dealer
- Ranged Physical damage dealer
Tanks are basically the front-line for any team in League of Legends. They can take damage, initiate fights, chase down enemies, provide unique auras to team, etc. Role of a tank is just as important as that of damage dealers because if there is no tank in team, late-game will be unbelievably horrible. Tanks also provide utility to team so that everyone can perform well in team-fights, e.g. Taric gives an AOE( Area Of Effect) aura which increases the Armor rating of nearby allies), Ammumu can snare enemies in an area so that his team can hunt them down, catch them or sometimes even used as escape tool. There are countless examples of tactical plays and fun part is that LOL lets you come up with any of your own.
To beginners and normal level players who may ask themselves that “which Tanky champion should I choose?” I would recommend picking something like Cho Gath, Malphite or Alistar.
Bruiser, off-tank and melee are just 3 names of calling same type of champions on the basis of slight differences from each of the sub-class. There are champions who can be classified as bruiser, off-tank and as well as melee, e.g. Riven is bruiser, tanky and also melee. Whereas, some champions are bruisers and melee but not tanky. e.g. Khazix is melee and a bruiser but is not tanky enough to be in the front-line. Role of bruisers is to find the squishiest targets in team-fights and eliminate them. League of Legends champions list contains some names that excel in performing such duties really well. There are some Assassins that act as bruisers/off-tank/melee and gets the job done pretty well. So if you would like to go for this category, you will have to select from one of these (bruiser, off-tank,melee). E.g.
- Irelia, off-tank type melee champion who is very hard to beat in 1v1 fights. Also an assassin who can make their way to squishy targets and destroy them.
- Talon, extreme burst damage bruiser/melee type champion who relies mostly on his skill-shots and can tear down squishies into 2 halves.
As from above examples, we can deduce that there are multiple ways of handling this class which is why it is sub-divided into smaller classes. All you need to do is to pick the one that suits your play style and taste. We have also seen some craziest combos where teams use bruiser/off-tank to perform the role of tank as well as inflict tons of damage. E.g. Oriana and Xin Zhao combo discussed in ‘most effective league of legends team combinations’.
This class is also capable of effective Jungling (In League of Legends 1 player hunts down/clears neutral monsters in jungle to gain gold, experience and neutral buffs for themselves/team-mates to improve their performance. Another purpose of such gameplay is to tactically handle neutral objective and to help lanes by ganking in-order to kill enemies). There is a whole world of possibilities out there.
Beginners and normal players can pick something like Darius, Master Yi, Warwick, Xin Zhao, Garen, etc. These champions are comparatively easy therefore you can learn them fast enough to increase your playable champion pool in League of Legends and then learn the difficult ones. These champions are also very effective in battlefield; your efforts in learning these champions will fruitful in the longer run.
3. Ranged Magic damage dealers
We also call them Mages or typically ‘Ability Power Carries’ (APC).The normal lane for APC is Mid lane where they face enemy APC. This class is all about offense which means that your team will be relying on you to deal most of the damage in team-fights. But there are team compositions which require some utility from APC too so your APC champion picks in League of Legends may vary from game to game depending on what your team requires. APC usually relies on their skill-shots, so if you are able to execute them well then this is the class for you. Since, you will be going to the mid lane you can actually stray your opponent or just force them to go to Base and then help some other lane with a Gank or something. Mid lane has a lot more control on overall game so if an APC manages to outplay their lane-opponent, result is pretty much decided at the same time. Therefore, if you want something like ‘High Risk, High Return’ then go APC.
I would recommend to Beginner – normal level players to play Annie, Vladimir, Moragana or Katarina. These League of Legends champions are not very difficult to learn but are hard to master. Once you get to learn them properly, you will find them very rewarding.
4. Ranged Physical damage dealers
We usually call them ‘Attack Damage Carries’ (ADC). As the name suggests, this type of League of Legends Champions inflict physical damage using ranged attacks. ADC is the greatest asset of a team therefore an ADC must not fail else it can become too hard for a team to do a Comeback. In League of Legends there are many champions who can serve in this role and each of them has their unique abilities to help them in combat. Therefore, all you need to do is to select the one that suits your fingers best because there are no recommended picks in general but you can surely check out our ‘recommended champion picks’ article. Concluding it in simple sentence; “if you are a beginner then try out some comparatively easy ADC like Ashe and if not then go for some advanced picks, keeping in view the team requirements.”
My recommendations to beginners and normal level players will be: Ashe, Tristana and Sivir. Don’t underestimate these champions because they are easy to learn. These 3 champions are capable to doing anything that any other top-tier ADC can do. (Actually, Ashe and Tristana are often used in even championship level matches) Therefore, mastering them will be extremely rewarding.
Supports are basically the backbone of any team of League of Legends. They play a very important role from beginning of the game till its ending. In beginner type gameplay you may not encounter support champions probably because no one feels the need (So you can go with some AP champion) but as you move towards competitive gameplay, you will find out how important supports are. Support Champions usually go where ADC goes. Normally it is Bot lane but in case of Lane-Swaps it is top lane. Sole purpose of support champions is to provide utility to the team by warding jungle and enemy territory to keep an eye on their moves, providing team with supporting buffs and auras, etc. Supports also help ADC in surviving the lane, picking kills and helping jungler with bot lane ganks.
Most recommended support champions for beginners and normal level players will be Nunu, Soraka, Sona and Taric. They are easy to learn and are very effective especially Nunu, Sona and Taric are potential support champions.
Jungler is an evolved role in League of Legends. It was basically developed as a result of tactical technique in gameplay. Usual formation without jungler is pretty simple, i.e. 2 champions/players go to Top-Lane, 1 champion/player goes to Mid-Lane and 2 champions/players go to Bot-Lane. Whereas, in this advanced formation Top-lane is usually 1 vs 1, same goes for Mid-lane, Bot-lane is 2 vs 2 and the 5th champion/player is basically the one who roams around in the jungle and hunts down neutral monsters to earn gold and experience.
Junglers also provide neutral buffs to champions/players who need it, helps in ganking lanes to pick kills on enemies, may also help to save an ally and most importantly their purpose is to secure neutral objectives like Dragon and Baron Nashor. It is a comparatively difficult role because neutral minions have a spawn time and give a certain amount of gold and experience therefore you will have to time yourself perfectly about when to clear jungle camps and when to gank. Plus a jungler has to keep an eye on map all the time so that they could do the calculations about when to strike, where to strike, when to attempt to save someone, when to go to base, etc.
Champion picks for Jungler role are usually Bruiser/off-tank type but we have also seen Ability Power (AP) junglers like Diana, Elise and Kayle. For beginners and normal players, I would recommend picking Warwick, Nunu, Malphite, Rammus, etc.
An Example of 5 vs 5 team that matches above explained team composition.(including Jungler)
After selecting a champion that can fulfill the role you picked there is only one thing you should keep in view; the champion you are picking should be able to synchronize itself with rest of the team. And that’s it. As you move forward and become better with time, you can simply combine this knowledge with knowledge on ‘Effective Team Compositions and Champion selects’ and ‘Effective Strategies’ in-order to do better in competitive game-plays.
